Concerns Regarding Practical Exams
Practical exams play a crucial role in assessing a student’s practical knowledge and skills. However, concerns have been raised by the Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary School Headmasters Association regarding the duration given for conducting practical exams. Currently, Class XII practical exams are scheduled from February 12 to 17, and Class XI practical exams will take place from February 19 to 24.
According to S Gnanasekaran, the general secretary of the association, one week’s time is insufficient for conducting practical exams for the eight lakh students appearing for Class XII. He suggests extending the duration of practical exams to two weeks to ensure proper evaluation and fairness.
Attendance Rules and Exemptions
To ensure academic discipline and consistency, the Tamil Nadu school education department has decided to strictly enforce the minimum 75% attendance rule this year. This means that students must maintain at least 75% attendance throughout the academic year to be eligible to appear for the board exams. However, valid medical reasons will be taken into consideration for granting exemptions.
The decision to enforce the attendance rule stems from the significant number of absentees during the Class XII board exams last year. Due to the relaxation of attendance rules, more than 50,000 students were absent from the exams. The strict enforcement aims to encourage students to attend classes regularly and strengthen their academic foundation.
Request for Pre-Board Exam Preparation Time
Private schools in Tamil Nadu have requested a two-week period to conduct pre-board exams for their students. This additional time before the start of the board exams would allow schools to thoroughly assess their students’ preparedness and identify areas that need improvement. N Vijayan, a senior principal, believes that starting the exams after the second week of March would enable schools across the state to conduct pre-board exams effectively.
Conclusion
With the announcement of the exam schedule, it is important for students to prepare diligently and utilize the time available to them effectively. Class X, XI, and XII board exams can be challenging, but with proper planning and dedication, students can achieve excellent results. The concerns raised by teachers regarding the practical exams should be addressed by the education department to ensure a fair and comprehensive assessment. Good luck to all the students appearing for the Tamil Nadu board exams!
