School Boards in 2024: Educational boards in India are responsible for conducting board exams up to Class 10+2. With a diverse culture among the nation with 29 states and the 7 territories, India has a wide range of Boards at National and State levels.
There are more than 15 lakhs schools in India out of which 1.58 Lakhs Secondary Schools and 1.42 Lakhs Higher Secondary Schools and remaining 12 Lakhs are Elementary Schools. The school boards in India provide curriculum, exam pattern, previous year question papers, sample question papers, and other study material for students.
Most of educational boards in India releases the Class 10th timetable along with the Class 12th exam schedule in the month of December every year. Generally, board exams in India are conducted in the month of March/April.
National and State Level Boards in India
There are mainly two types of Boards, one is National Level Board and another is State level Boards. National Boards are ICSE, CBSE, ISCE, NIOS and IGCSE etc. Some name of State Boards are Kerala Board, UP Board, Bihar Board, Maharashtra Board, MP Board etc.
CBSE Board
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducts exams up to secondary and senior secondary level. The CBSE Board has released the latest syllabus, sample papers and marking scheme for each term.
CBSE Headquarter located in Delhi. The board has 16 regional offices located in Ajmer, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Delhi East, Delhi West, Guwahati, Noida, Panchkula, Patna, Prayagraj (Allahabad), Pune and Thiruvananthapuram.

ICSE Board
The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) conducts three examinations, namely, the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE – Class X); The Indian School Certificate (ISC – Class XII), and the Certificate of Vocational Education (CVE – Year 12).
ICSE board is a privately-held education board at the National level and regulated by CISCE. There are over 2750+ schools affiliated to the Board across the globe. The ICSE Board has its own set of syllabus which is followed by all the schools.

NIOS
The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) established to provide relevant, continuing and holistic education up to pre-degree level through open and Distance Learning System.
NIOS is a National Board which is regulated directly under the Union government and was also established by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD).
NIOS has regional centres located in Allahabad, Amethi, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Delhi, Dharamshala, Gandhinagar, Gangtok, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kochi, Kolkata, Patna, Pune, Raipur, Ranchi and Visakhapatnam. NIOS sub-Regional Centres are located in Darbhanga and Kota. NIOS has abroad study centres located in UAE, Kuwait, Muscat, Nepal, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
NIOS Board operates in a way different from the other Boards, as it gives the candidates the liberty to choose what subjects they want to study and at what pace. NIOS conducts on-demand and public exams for Classes 10 and 12. NIOS conducts board exams twice a year in March/April and September/October.
NIOS follows the following credit system:
- Each subject is assigned 240 hours for self-study. Total 5 subjects are required at the Secondary and Senior Secondary level which makes it of 1200 hours and 40 credits in one year
- 1 credit is equivalent to 30 hours of total study i.e. each subject is of 8 credits.
Every year, more than 3,00,000 students enroll with the NIOS Board, making it one of the largest open schooling systems. The board provides all the study relevant information, such as syllabus, exam pattern, books, and so on through the official website nios.ac.in.
IGCSE Board
The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Board is a part of Cambridge University. The IGCSE Board exams are conducted and regulated by Cambridge International Education.
There are more than 10,000 schools affiliated to the IGCSE Board across the globe. The Board offers over 70 subjects at the IGCSE levels which makes the IGCSE Board one of the more flexible Boards over other prevalent Boards.
The fees for the IGCSE Board schools may range from INR 1,35,000 to INR 1,45,000. This could be the main deciding factor for most of the parents as it is more expensive than the other boards.
State level boards in India
Most states have their own educational boards for conducting Secondary and Higher secondary examinations. Some of these different boards in India are Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UP Board), Bihar School Education Board (BSEB), Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board, Rajasthan board, and so on. These school boards in India provide curriculum in the regional languages and the schools runs under state government are affiliated to these state level boards in India.
State Boards are individually run by the state government. The state boards follow a separate syllabus and a ranking criteria owing to the state. These are not regulated centrally but at state levels and hence may have a different educational strategy. The Board focuses more on the subjects which are related to the state and prepares the candidates for the state-level engineering or medical entrance examinations. One of the major drawbacks of the state boards can be that they believe in the mode of delivery in the regional language making it difficult for the candidates to grasp other languages in their further studies.
